LADY RYDER - Sue Ryder was created
Baroness Ryder of Warsaw in 1978 - was an intensely private person.
A devout Christian, she could easily have become a nun but, instead, has devoted
her life to the needs of the sick.
She headed the Sue Ryder Foundation, a world-wide charity which has over 500
shops, a range of coffee and gift shops, together with 18 care centres in this
country and homes throughout the world - a remarkable achievement.
About Sue Ryder Care
Sue Ryder Care supports people with a wide range of disabilities and life-shortening diseases, as well as families, carers and friends, both in this country and internationally. A wide range of services is provided, and includes both long and short-term care. There are 18 care centres within the UK.
For the many thousands of people who use the facilities afforded by Sue Ryder,
how many know of its structure, or its provision of care?
Internationally, services include mobile care units and sheltered accommodation
in 11 other countries. Care centres specialise in the care most needed by a
local community. This includes people with Huntington's disease, Cancer, Motor
Neurone disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Cerebral Palsy, Brain
Injury and many other conditions.
To provide this high level of service there are over 400 Sue Ryder shops which
make a vital contribution to the charity.
None of this would be possible without the professional and co-ordinated fundraising
teams around the country, allied with the enthusiasm and commitment of employees,
volunteers and supporters.
Sue Ryder is a successful major charity and this is due to its management
structure; The Trustees (the non-executive directors) and the Senior Management
Team (the executive directors). The 10 Trustees are the guardians of the charity's
fundamental purpose. The Senior Management Team are professional paid managers,
tasked by the Trustees with the day to day running and strategic direction of
the Sue Ryder operation
This, then, is a brief glimpse of a major charity.
