Leather-bound book, approx 8x5"

Customs of the Bishoprick of the Headley Estate

Written by Sir Thomas Gatehouse of Headley Park circa 1766

***

[From Grayshott by JH Smith]

"In 1766 Sir Thomas Gatehouse of Headley was worried because of uncertainty concerning the rents payable to the lord of the manor by the tenants. He made investigations, no doubt in the episcopal records [Gatehouse says from a Parliamentary Roll], and found and copied out a survey of the Tithing of Headley made in 1552 . This copy has survived in the Blount Papers in the County Records Office."

[From Phillip Brooks' (unpublished) work on the Winchester Pipe Rolls]

"This survey of the lands and houses of the Bishop's tenants in Sutton is one of the most important local documents. The original book is written in latin and is not easy to read. A translation of the Headley section made in the 18th Century was found in the Combe-Millar papers (Froyle). Not only does it enable wills to be traced to particular farms, but it also gives names of farms which can be identified through the medieval fines."

Notes on transcription

Sir Thomas Gatehouse used the notebook as a personal record of his findings, and it contains many marginal notes and insertions whose context is almost impossible to replicate in the textual transcritpion offered here. It also contains some sketch-maps, which are not included here. In addition, you should be aware that the names of both the people and places he records are sometimes those relating to 1552 and at other times those of the 1770s.

Original (and often inconsistent) spelling has generally been transcribed accurately for names, but modern spelling forms have often been substituted for commonly used words — Spelling of entries in the Index has been regularised where this was felt to be of benefit.

Errors will inevitably have crept into this transcription, and researchers are advised to consult the original material where possible, using this transcription as a guide.

A microfiche copy of the entire contents of 23M50/42 has been purchased from Hampshire Record Office, and is held by the Headley Archives. Contact me for further information .
