Historic Headley

Friday 11th April 2014
7.30 for 8pm at Headley Village Hall

The first in a series of talks on the history of Headley and its surroundings by John Owen Smith

Tonight: two tales with an Australian connection

  • One Monday in November … and beyond – the Selborne & Headley workhouse riots of 1830 (the Swing Riots) and their aftermath – a story that won't die, as my current correspondence with Australia proves!

  • A Parcel of Gold for Edith – letters from the Australian goldfields to England 1853-1875.  The discovery of letters in Headley from a gt-gt-aunt in an old bureau leads to a 30-year search for the identity of an Australian Pioneer Woman.
