Poppies (36K)
Surrealist blooms among the green-eared barley
give bright impressions of

Poppies

By Galley Hill and Noar Hill,

. . . climb from Selborne
through worked-out chalk pits to a brow
that opens onto sweeping rural vistas -
which in their turn see sower, reaper, plough.

But this is sweet July, and here before us,
spread as if a patchwork quilt were laid,
are poppies' crimson flags in wild profusion,
camouflaging crops that they invade.
