Speaker adept at bringing history to life Alice Holt WI was pleased to welcome back John Owen Smith as the speaker as he had greatly entertained members with two previous talks
What a superb evening! We all enjoyed hearing your research into the background of Flora's travels and to be given it by a Local Historian, Family Historian and an Actor, such a combination. [West Surrey FHS, Farnham branch]
Members of Passfield and District WI felt that John Owen Smith was one of the best speakers they had ever had.
Jo Smith, one of last year's popular speakers, gave a lively talk on the Selborne and Headley Workhouse Riots of 1830. [Churt WI]
I should like to thank you for giving us such an entertaining talk [the Workhouse Riots] was a subject on which I suspect few of us had much knowledge and your way of portraying the events really brought it to life, particularly the excerpts from the radio play. [The Worldhams WI]
Mr Smith enthralled his audience with a talk called 'On the Trail of Flora Thompson, beyond Candleford Green'. He spoke of his recently-published book of the same name and the research he had undertaken to trace the people mentioned by Flora in her books.
Being a local celebrity, and knowing the places where Flora had lived and worked, made the talk all the more interesting.
Jo Smith has carried out an amazing amount of research into Flora Thompson's life and his enthusiasm for the subject came through to us all. [Headley Wives' Group]
Mr Smith has personally published Heatherley and other works, and the audience showed a good deal of interest in his publishing techniques. Do we have a lot of budding authors in our midst? [West Surrey FHS, Guildford branch]
Thank you for such an interesting talk like Oliver Twist, we would all have liked more. [Surrey Heath Local History Club]
Jo Smith visited us to give his excellent talk 'Flora Thompson, beyond Candleford Green'. If your group hasn't booked him yet, I recommend you should do so; you will be in for a treat! [Hampshire Genealogical Society, Fleet & Farnborough branch]
I looked at the October programme and was not too impressed: 'Flora Thompson in East Hampshire' by John Smith. Who in the world was Flora Thompson? Well, John Smith soon told us. John is such an accomplished speaker and with so much enthusiasm for his subject that we began to wonder why we had never heard of this wonderful writer called Flora Thompson. [Hampshire Genealogy Society, Gosport branch]
Jo Smith gave an interesting talk for May's meeting on 'The Selborne & Headley Workhouse Riots' which occurred in November 1830. He brought his talk alive by the use of taped recordings so that you felt you were actually listening to the events as they happened. The story behind the riots was explained together with the resulting consequences, which included transportation to Australia for the principal characters involved. 170 years after the event it brought home the conditions that our ancestors suffered. A most enjoyable evening and lecture. [Hampshire Genealogy Society, New Milton & Christchurch branch]
Thank you so much for speaking to our Society you are so enthusiastic and refreshing. Also you speak so clearly that our older and slighly deaf members cannot have had any problems. It was a fascinating talk and you had better be prepared for a request to give another at some stage. [Alresford Historical & Literary Society]
('Hindhead is Safe') It was fascinating, and I think you may have gleaned how interested your audience was by their questions and anecdotes. We really did enjoy it very much, so this is a thank you from all of us. [Haslemere Natural History Society]
The presentation (Swing Riots) as a mix of play and talk was most unusual. The different characters in different dialects also came over very well, making what could have been a dull subject very interesting. Your enthusiasm and interest in your research kept us all very attentive. [The Hundred of Portsdown Local History Group]
The noteless, faultless talk (Flora Thompson) was impressive we wish more speakers were like you! I felt the questions could have gone on far longer and that you would always have known the answer. [Midhurst U3A]
I suspect that I have no need to tell you that your talk ('What Flora did next') last Saturday was a great success, as you will have witnessed this from the numbers who came to hear you and the interest shown during and after your talk. However, from meetings around the town, I have since picked up lots of very positive feedback during the last few days and it is clear that the talk was much enjoyed. [Peter Sturge, Family Line Surrey]
Thank you so much for the very interesting talk (Flora Thompson) which you gave to the Somborne Society. I knew from the questions the members asked that they had greatly enjoyed your talk. I thought you would like to know that I received nothing but favourable comments when I met members afterwards. They were all impressed with your enthusiasm for your subject. [Somborne & District Society]
Thank you so very much for a quite outstanding talk yesterday (Selborne & Headley Riots of 1830). Our members clearly enjoyed it, and we all learnt a great deal. [The Selborne Association]
Jo Smith's in-depth knowledge of the subject (Flora Thompson) was impressive. His informal delivery put us all at ease and resulted in a lively question and answer session after the talk. [Mari Wallace, Liphook Community Magazine]
Thank you on behalf of all our members for your most enjoyable talk on Flora Thompson. [Bournemouth Literary Luncheon Club]
I was impressed by your knowledge and fascinated to learn about Flora's life, her books and her connections to the local area. It was particularly good to see how you engaged with the audience and how well your readings gave insight into the subject. [Hampshire Genealogical Society, Fleet & Farnborough branch]
I was thanked by many people who enjoyed your talk (Hindhead is Safe!) [Milford and District U3A]
Thank you for your most interesting & informative talk on Flora Thompson. Not only was the background information fascinating but you opened up so many unknown aspects of her life and achievements. [Fleet & Crookham Local History Group]
A presentation with a difference? When it happens, it's a celebration. So, there were were on Thursday finding ourselves shaken awake by an absolutely audible speaker whose academic qualifications were expected but whose wit and talents as a detective were something of a revelation as it turned out. (Flora Thompson) [Kingsclere Heritage Association]
On behalf of the Tadley History Society I would like to thank you for an interesting and enlightening talk last Wednesday. From the number of visitors attending the meeting it would seem there is quite an interest in Flora Thompson. The fact that there were no slides to look at but the audience were still rivetted to the information forthcoming is a pointer to your charisma as a speaker. [Tadley History Society]
Thank you for a fascinating talk on 'Bringing Local History to Life'. You clearly struck a chord with many of our members; hopefully it will encourage some to take part in our project to record people's memories of Fleet. [Fleet & Crookham Local History Group]
We were pleased to welcome back John Owen Smith, local historian, playwright, author and publsher. He gave us an entertaining account of how he first became involved with local history [West Surrey FHS, Farnham branch]
Just a note to say very many thanks again for coming to talk to us about Flora Thompson before our Christmas lunch on Tuesday. Your talk was really interesting and also very entertaining. I've had lots of positive feedback from our members, who were very impressed. [The Arts Society, Grayshott]
Thank you so much for your talk today (on Flora Thompson). I have had very good feed back from our members who found your point of view as an historian very engaging. Once again, Thank you for a very informative and entertaining afternoon. [Chichester Literary Society]
John Owen Smith gave us a charming and interesting talk entitled 'A Parcel of Gold for Edith' [West Surrey FHS, Camberley branch]
John's talk starts 15 years earlier with the social conditions that led to discontent in the south and which culminated in the riot over two days in November 1830 with the destruction of the workhouses by local labourers. Like any good story there are villains and heroes, in fact John also wrote it as a play performed on stage and radio, looking at the characters involved and the aftermath, and brought it up to the present day with the descendants of the rioters, one of whom is Lesley Manville (as 'seen on TV'!). He has written a book so you can even go back in time and retrace the steps of the rioters either physically or if you chicken out via a map! [Hampshire Genealogical Society, Fleet & Farnborough branch]
